About
OUR BIRTH STORY…
The Lemon Grove was birthed from the original Lemons & Labor doula & photography business that owner & founder Marissa Hathaway started. Marissa comes from a career in global & local maternal health, trauma-informed care, and health education.
In 2023, Marissa founded the doula agency component of The Lemon Grove - an expansion of doula & community support, centered around a trauma-informed & evidence-based approach to supporting families across the perinatal span. We are a zesty team of uniquely experienced doulas, passionate about accessibility, straightforward communication, compassionate accompaniment, and judgment-free & resource-rich care. Through heartfelt collaboration, we aim to establish confidence and empowered decision-making in our community. In 2024, we opened the doors to the perinatal wellness collaborative - our physical space in Boxford, MA, where we host childbirth education, lactation, and parenting classes, fun activities for babies and toddlers with music, play, and education, and events for parents in the community.
Why the lemons? A note from Marissa:
“My maternal grandmother and I share the same birthday, and she liked lemons. Over the years, I have adopted the lemon as part of my identity, and even had a lemon inspired wedding! To me, lemons are not only the sentimental thread connecting me to my grandmother’s memory, but are also a symbol of refreshment, vitality, beauty, healing, the yin and yang of sweet and tart, and under the right conditions, can be grown anywhere. I am an active gardener and many of those philosophies transcend beyond a yard - I enjoy the practice of cultivating the environment around me, connecting with resources to ensure my “gardens” thrive in every sense, and to nourish people so they flourish.
This is our approach to supporting you at The Lemon Grove.”
Meet The Team
At The Lemon Grove, we provide professional, holistic doula support for every step of your unique perinatal journey. With an orchard of resources, we offer personalized, community-based care through labor & birth doula services, postpartum doula services, breastfeeding support/formula feeding support, prenatal education courses, and more.
Many of our doulas also facilitate our support groups & other events - let’s layer in as much community as we can for you!

Maryssa D.
Certified Postpartum Doula
she/her
Maryssa’s son was born in January 2022 and she had felt pretty prepared after working with babies and toddlers for over 10 years prior to becoming a mom. Maryssa loves seeing new parents gaining confidence - she enjoys offering guidance when someone is feeling lost and helping them feel excitement with their successes. Maryssa often is told she makes others feel comfortable and at ease quickly, and has a very calm temperament which she has found reassuring for new parents, and also excels working with families on their second child and beyond. Her ultimate goal is to guide and hold supportive space for her clients, so they can tap into their own parental instincts, growing a little more confident each day.
Jacqui's approach is also informed by her personal experiences through her own three (very different) labor experiences, which earned her a broad respect for the unpredictable nature of birth, the empowering possibilities of birth and the vital need of in-person support during the postpartum period. She is endlessly fascinated by the processes of birth and raising humans. She believes wholeheartedly in the transformative power of both.

Courtney D.
Postpartum Doula
she/her
Courtney is a former nanny turned Newborn Care Specialist/Postpartum Doula. After working as a career nanny for over a decade, Courtney decided to pivot and take her lifelong love of babies and her more recently newfound appreciation of the postpartum period and turn it into a fulfilling and rewarding career as a postpartum doula.
Inspired in part by her own postpartum experiences, Courtney hopes to empower, encourage and support every new parent who crosses her path. While Courtney enjoys working with a variety of families, she is particularly passionate about working with those who identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community as well as single parents by choice (Before meeting her now wife, Courtney started out as a Single Mom By Choice to her oldest daughter).
In addition to postpartum support, Courtney also hopes to support those who are suffering with Hyperemesis Gravidarum. After surviving two HG pregnancies, she realized how little support and understanding there really is out there for those who suffer from HG. As someone whose partner had to take on 99% of the household responsibilities during their HG experience, Courtney hopes to provide both practical and emotional support to those currently struggling with the horrific condition.
Courtney currently lives on the North Shore with her wife, their two daughters and three cats.

Rachel believes in meeting you where you are—mentally, physically, and emotionally. No matter what you’re going through, Rachel will walk beside you, ready to support you in whatever way feels right for you.

Jacqueline L.
Certified Full Spectrum Doula
she/her
Jacqueline received her full spectrum doula certification from Birthing Advocacy Doula Trainings in 2023 and she has been supporting families in this period of life for years.
Her experience is in doula care, infant day-care settings, nannying, non-profit work, and milk banking. Outside of doula care, she currently works at the Mother’s Milk Bank Northeast as a donor intake specialist.
She is also working towards earning her IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant certification) and being able to further support families in their lactation journeys.
Jacqueline loves the moments when she is working with a family and she sees that something clicks for them and they realize how amazing they are! She is here to help hold you in one of the most vulnerable, joyful, difficult, and incredible times of your life.
Jacqueline's long term goal is to have an impact on marginalized communities. Doula care, especially support during the postpartum period, is seen as a luxury to many people, because it has become more inaccessible. She aims to serve all families and parents, especially those that are not always able to get the care that they need.

Randi S.
Postpartum Doula
she/her
Randi is a mom of two and certified postpartum doula. She has spent the majority of her life working with children of all ages and abilities in numerous settings.
Before becoming a mother, Randi had a career in Applied Behavior Analysis, working with neurodivergent and Autistic children from infancy through young adulthood.
After her own complicated journey through conception and pregnancy, experiencing a difficult postpartum time and spending six years as a stay at home mother, Randi found herself longing to provide new parents with the knowledge, help and support she knew would have greatly benefited her and her family. Randi began supporting her friends and family members through the newborn phase and loving every second of it! As more people began to lean on Randi for guidance, she realized that she had finally found her passion in her own life through this work. Because of these experiences as well as her own, she pursued an education as a birthworker focusing on the postpartum experience. As your postpartum doula, Randi looks forward to providing emotional, physical and informed support to help ease this transitional phase of life.
Advice to families: The time when a baby is first brought home is a time of adjustment for the whole family. Allow yourself to process these changes and give yourself grace through the journey. You are exactly the right parent for your child.
Randi has a passion for hiking mountains in the summer and skiing down them in the winter! Getting out into nature and challenging her mind and body has always been cathartic and her favorite way to reconnect with herself.

Kate R.
Certified Postpartum Doula
she/her
Kate is a kind, attentive, dedicated doula, who loves supporting parents and their babies. Being a doula comes full circle for her - she started nursing school to eventually became a midwife but then shifted her path to being a school teacher for many years. Kate loved helping her students find their passion for learning & self-confidence.
After teaching, she became a Certified Nursing Assistant and focused on elder care. Similar to her teaching approach, Kate’s elder care was focused on building relationships and trust. Her reliability, relentlessly cheerfulness and levelheadedness allowed her to support families and individuals through challenging situations such as dementia, isolation, and loss of independence.
As a doula, Kate brings this approach to her work and is attune to others, so she meets them wherever they’re at. Sometimes that means holding space for a new parent who is feeling overwhelmed, other times that means literally holding a baby so that parents can sleep. Having a new baby can be a really vulnerable time and Kate is here as an extra set of hands to care for the whole family and to remind parents to care for themselves. She is there to take the pressure off and to share tips, if needed.
Outside of doula work, Kate loves being with family, doing family trips, cooking, learning new things, and binge watching a good show. Her advice to new parents is to remember you are doing an amazing job and will learn from the baby what he/she needs.

Jenny P.
Certified Birth & Postpartum Doula and Lactation Counselor
she/her
Jenny’s interest in supporting birthing people goes back many years. While living in California in the mid-1990s, she acted as labor companion for a pair of close friends who were expecting their first child. She found the experience incredibly powerful and uplifting. It literally changed Jenny’s life, and pursuing a career in birth support became a long-harbored dream of hers.
In 2005, the birth of Jenny’s son added a completely different perspective to her experience. After a bout with breast cancer and struggling with infertility, she eventually got pregnant with the help of a medicated IUI, and went on to have a mostly complication-free pregnancy. Unfortunately, once she and her partner found themselves in the labor and delivery room, they faced questions for which they had no answers. Jenny’s son was born vaginally, with no complications, but her experience of his birth left her feeling frustrated and unhappy with herself and her choices. Jenny realized the critical importance of in-depth prenatal education, a plan to cope with labor, and strong perinatal support, especially for first-time parents. This strengthened her resolve to help others avoid the same situation.
In 2017, Jenny made the decision to put her graphic design career on the back burner, and take the plunge to become a birth doula. While she was excited about the chance to finally put her dream into action, it wasn’t until she had finished her training and joined the doula community that Jenny really understood the passion she has for birthwork. It is a calling in the truest sense of the word, and Jenny is beyond grateful to have the opportunity to engage in such meaningful work. After a few years of birthwork, Jenny decided to pursue a postpartum doula certification to increase the value of her follow-up work with birth clients. The early weeks and months of parenting is a time of such vulnerability for parents, and such high need for infants, that it no longer made sense to her to offer birth support alone. Jenny is now honored to assist her clients during the hugely steep learning curve that comes after birth.
When Jenny is not supporting perinatal clients, she is an independent book designer and also enjoys kayaking the beautiful lakes and rivers near her home, knitting, exploring the history of New England, & gardening.

Tia is from southern NH where she lives with her husband and three children. In her free time, she enjoys spending the day in the sun with her family, gardening, crocheting and volunteering within the community.
“I believe in the power of advocacy, compassion, and education during this vulnerable and momentous time. Everyone deserves someone to be a trusted guide, confidant, and friend with continuity of care through pregnancy, birth and parenthood. Holding space for families, offering encouragement, and helping them navigate the labyrinth of birth excites and inspires me.” — Tia
